Though, I have never been a victim of racism before, maybe because I have not been opportuned to travel out to other African countries. But I have been hearing stories of people who were caught in the abuse of racism, just because they were from other neighbouring African country. But here in Lagos, I have witnessed and experience series of domestic racism which starts when you are not from a particular major tribe of a state in the country. For example when you an Ibo person and you find your self in the midst of other tribe, you will find it difficult to interact or relate with other tribes, just because you don’t understand or comprehend their own local dialects. Or maybe in the connection Sega for securing a job in a bank or oil company, it is who you know application method that works and not the kind of application that you were thought to write in school. So racial discrimination lives down here in Nigeria.
Major ethnic crisis’s we are having in Africa are caused by the hatred of a fellow black man for their neighbor. It’s so surprising that racism lives in every nooks and crannies of countries in Africa. Africa as a whole contains 55 countries with an estimate 2000 languages spoken in the continent, with Nigeria 250 languages spoken daily, which include Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ibibio, Annang, Efik, Urhobo and others, such as Laal, Shabo, and Dahalo, are spoken by a few hundred or fewer. but the citizens of the individual countries still suffers from the abuse of racism, recently in South Africa, which is supposed to be the image of modern Africa, is a place, where racism lives. Since the era of apartheid ended, millions of African immigrants have poured into South Africa seeking jobs, shelter and sanctuary. But instead, they have become scape goats for many of the country’s social problem, which has lead to high rate of unemployments, shortage of housing and one of the worst level of crimes in the world. Many Immigrants foreigners from other troubled neighbouring regions, states, and countries were beaten, some burnt to death in a South African city of Johannesburg and their major excuse for such mal-racial attitudes is that other immigrants or foreigners have taken over their jobs, houses and shelter, which have caused shortage of jobs, housing.
Chanting “Kick the foreigners out” immigrants from neighboring African countries were seized and attacked by street gangs and hoodlums with guns, sticks and iron bars.
More than 50 immigrants and foreigner has been taken to the nearby hospitals or clinics with a serious or minor stab or bullet wounds and also looting of properties and shops, homes and businesses owned by immigrants and foreigners.
Among the victimized foreigners are terrified Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Malawians who fled to the safety of the local police station and to another township, Diepsloot. According to the Institute of Race Relations, there are 3 to 5 million immigrants or a foreigners living in South Africa, which is equivalent to white’s population. “Destructive divisiveness” is what Nelson Mandela called this act. After he used his entire life to set his country free from apartheid and it’s now the other side of apartheid which racial discrimination among fellow African countries.
If a major country in the continent is to be named among the best economies of the 2020’s, then the habit of racial discrimination need to be erased and wiped out from the continent. The treaties for free trade zones, democratic dialoging and settling of crisises within the African Union, the Economy of Western African States, and other francophone countries in African should be imbibed.
And the Object of promoting trade, co-operation and self-reliance in West Africa should be encouraged within the African continents, in this way; Africa will grow out of poverty, disease and domestic racism
